| Pileated Woodpecker at Glen Providence Park |
One of the things that I volunteer my time for is a reviewer for eBird in both Delaware and Montgomery Counties. One day while reviewing some sightings at Glen Providence Park in Media I contacted a contributor to ask for documentation of one of her sightings. As we were emailing back and forth I found that Stephanie was a very enthusiastic birder and has a great love for Glen Providence Park, which was established in 1935 as a bird sanctuary and arboretum. You can get directions, a trail map, and information about its history, plants and wildlife, at www.glenprovidencepark.org
She volunteers for Friends of Glen Providence Park as a watchdog for the park as the Media Borough gets together a plan to repair the bridge adjacent to the park and next to Broomall's Lake. The Friends are working with Delaware County Parks on ways to preserve and enhance the park. The Friends are also currently involved in censusing the bird life and trees in the park.
Now she has approached me with a terrific idea and I would like the BCDC to also get involved. Her idea is to have a Big Year in Glen Providence Park. This would involve the club members, and anyone else for that matter, to visit the park a few times during the course of the year and record the birds they see on eBird. Or if you don't want to record them to eBird then just send a list to Stephanie at friendsoftheglenATgmail.com or myself and we would then enter the data into eBird.
I think this would be a fun project and you would be able to see the progress of the big year by checking eBird for the park's current list. The park is located right in the Borough of Media and is a small park so you could easily cover the area is less than an hour.
